The word REIKI, pronounced as 'Ray-Key' means healing touch, 'Rei' meaning spirtual wisdom and Ki means life-force energy. The Chinese call this energy 'Chi', Hindus call it 'Prana', and Muslims call it 'Barakka', while modern scientists call it Bioplasmic energy.
History of Reiki:
It is said that reiki is about 100,000 years old and has been part of the Lemurian era when man was first incarnated. People in this era were spiritual and possessed great psychic powers, they were directly connected to God. As time passed, their selfish pursuits and lower negative energies took their toll and finally they lost their contact with the divine nature.
Dr. Mika Usui was the principle of Doshisha Christian University in Kyoto, Japan, in the late 18th century. Once when he was asked by one of his students, "How did Jesus heal his followers?", Dr.Usui was unable to answer it. After that he resigned from his post and started his quest on finding how Jesus healed his followers.
He traveled to different areas in the search for answers, he went to Chicago and studied their for seven years and acquired his degree in theology. Later he went to India and Tibet, learnt Sanskrit and studied the sacred Tibetan Lotus Sutras and found clues to his quest. He then returned to Japan and focused on the teachings of Buddha as he is known to have performed miracles like Jesus. Dr.Usui's journey finally led him to a Zen Monastery where he read the Sutras writings and teachings of Buddha. On the advice of the monks, he started meditation.
Dr.Usui meditated for 21 days on a mountain peak. He fasted and meditated continuously, and at the end he received enlightenment when a golden light hit his forehead with the sacred Reiki symbols and a divine voice, the effect of this incident was so strong that he fainted. When the doctor woke up, he didn't feel exhausted even slightly even though he had been fating for such a long time.Dr.Usui started running downhill to the monastery, and in excitement he he hurt his feet and they started bleeding. He simply placed his palm over the injured area and the pain vanished immediately.
